What's involved in planning a headstone?
Ordering a memorial or headstone is something most people only do once or twice in their lives. We're here to guide you through the entire process.
Location
We’ll begin by asking where the memorial will be placed. Each cemetery has its own rules about size and shape, especially public ones where regulations vary by section. Private cemeteries and urupā usually have more flexibility.
We’ll explain any requirements that apply to your chosen site.
Design
What kind of memorial are you thinking about? You might select from our large range of existing designs, or we can create something custom to suit. Custom memorials can be made to almost any size.
If you’re unsure, we’ll walk you through some options and recommend looking through our image galleries for inspiration.
Budget
Plaques for cremation memorials typically range from $600 to $1500.
Full memorial sets start around $1500, with most falling between $3000 and $6000. We work with a wide range of budgets, so please talk to us about what’s right for you.
Payment options
Once your design is confirmed, we’ll provide a full quote. A deposit is required to place your order, and the balance is due before the memorial is installed.
We’re happy to offer payment by instalment, provided the full amount is paid before installation or collection.
Material and colour
Granite is the most widely used material due to its strength and durability. Black is most common, but there are many colours to choose from.
As a natural stone, granite may vary slightly in tone or pattern from one piece to another.
We can also work with marble — ask us if this is something you'd like to consider.
Inscription
We’ll collect the details to be inscribed — name, birth and death dates, and any additional wording you’d like.
Many families include a short message, family connections or a poem. We can help with ideas if needed.
Lettering can be done in 23ct gold leaf or painted. White and silver are most common, but other colours are available — especially for children's memorials.
We can also add images and symbols.
Ceramic photos
Photos can be embedded into the stone in full colour, black and white, or sepia. A range of shapes and sizes are available.
Timeframe
If we have your chosen memorial in stock, it usually takes 4–6 weeks to complete. If it needs to be ordered, allow 3–4 months, and sometimes longer depending on supply and design.
If you need the memorial ready by a specific date — such as an unveiling, anniversary, or birthda — let us know early.
Installation
Public cemeteries often require a certified monumental mason to install memorials and plaques. Our quotes include installation unless you let us know you plan to arrange it yourself
