Upright monument memorials are one of the more common headstone styles. The term refers to vertical plaques set on a granite base, which is placed on a concrete foundation. Designs vary in height and shape, depending on what the cemetery allows.
These memorials can be made for one person (single) or two (companion), with details engraved directly onto the stone. Inscriptions are typically filled with a contrasting paint for readability.
The upright section — often called the plate, die or desk — is upright at the front and back. A saddle or camber top is most frequently chosen, though other top shapes include rooftop, oval, flat, or with rounded corners.
Most of the upright headstones we produce are made from granite, available in a wide range of sizes, colours and shapes. Marble is an option too, but it's less common now due to higher cost and maintenance.
Images and symbols can also be etched or sandblasted into the stone. Common motifs include portraits, flowers, koru, religious signs, club or service logos, flags and cultural icons.
Alternate terms include upright gravestone, upright tombstone, upright marker, and upright monument.
